Liebster Award Nomination – Dankeschön!

Things have been so busy that I haven’t had the chance to post my final blog post about Vegas yet. It’s in the works and almost done. Sometimes, I struggle to find time to write a post but this week, I got nominated for the Liebster Award and that got me all pumped up to start writing again.

So what is this nomination? The Liebster Award has been around since 2011 to encourage bloggers to discover and promote new and emerging blogs with less than 1,000 followers. My blog isn’t actually new but I also never actively promoted it, so I was pleasantly delighted when Matthew from The Adventures of a Day Hiker called out our blog this week. Matthew is a also huge fan of our national parks, so thank you for the nomination!

After the nomination, things go like this:

1. Post about the award, thank the person who nominated you and link to their blog.
2. Answer their questions about yourself.
3. Nominate 5 –10 people with fewer than 1,000 followers, let them know via social media.
4. Write your own set of questions for your nominees.
5. Feel good about yourself for winning an award and pass it on.

And here are my answer’s to Matthew’s questions.

Why did you start blogging? In 2010, we quit our jobs to travel the world for a year. The blog was originally created to tell stories about our experience traveling for close friends and family. After the trip was over, I decided to keep it alive by filling it with travel stories about new trips and past trips because we will never stop exploring. I write in English and then translate everything to German, so that my family and anyone who is more comfortable with German can read it, too.

What is your favorite place you’ve ever visited? Matt and I both love the outdoors. National parks are definitely on top of my list, for example Banff National Park in Canada and Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming but we were also huge fans of Ecuador and Laos during our year off traveling.

What place is atop your bucket list? More national parks and more hiking. In fact, we booked flights to Seattle and are going the North Cascades later this year. I would also love to go to Glacier National Park in Montana and travel to Nepal some day to hike in the Himalayas.

What is your dream job? I would work less in order to have more free time to explore, maybe 10-20 hours a week, and also spend less time in the car and more time outside.

What is your favorite book? 1984 by George Orwell, a dystopian novel published in 1949 about a totalitarian surveillance state. I first read it in high school in English class. It is also one of the few books I have read multiple times (another one is Das Parfum by Patrick Süskind). Plus, it gets you from the first sentence: It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen… Don’t get me started on why this book is now more relevant than ever…

What are your favorite things to do when you’re not blogging? Running, which fits in with being outdoors and being active. With winters in New England, it can be challenging but I don’t care. Running gives me a free mind and time to myself. I love it. Sometimes I also blog about running because I consider it related to traveling because it takes you to new places, lets you explore and makes you feel free.

Do you travel with children? We don’t have children but if we did, I would certainly travel with them.

3. Stay Wild. Roam Free. A small town girl from Wisconsin blogs about her love for the outdoors. I liked her post about Arizona. We were just there in October. Magical state!

4. Travel Muses love to do family-friendly trips all over the world, including the US, Europe, New Zealand and Asia. They offer great inspiration for your next trip to save you some planning time.

5. Regular Guy Adventures. The keyword for this blog is BHAG, an acronym I happened to know from work: Big hairy audacious goals! His blog greets you with a giant map of the US with pins for the places he has been. Love it!

Es ist die ganze Zeit so viel los und ich kam bisher noch nicht dazu, meinen letzten Bericht über Las Vegas zu veröffentlichen. Ich bin dran und fast fertig. Manchmal finde ich es einfach schwierig, die Zeit für einen Bericht zu finden, aber diese Woche wurde ich für den Liebster-Award nominiert und habe jetzt wieder Lust zum Schreiben.

Was ist das für eine Nominierung? Den Liebster-Award gibt es seit 2011 und er regt Blogger dazu an, neue und entstehende Blogs mit weniger als 1.000 Followern zu entdecken und zu fördern, von daher war ich positiv überrascht, als Matthew von The Adventures of a Day Hiker diese Woche unseren Blog nominiert hat. Matthew ist auch ein großer Fan von Nationalparks, danke also für die Nominerung!

Nach der Nominierung geht es so weiter:

1. Man schreibt über den Award, dankt der Person, von der man nominiert wurde und verlinkt auf deren Blog.
2. Man beantwortet eine Reihe von Fragen über sich.
3. Man nominiert 5-10 Blogs mit weniger als 1.000 Followern und sagt ihnen über Social Media Bescheid.
4. Man schreibt selbst Fragen für die Nominierten.
5. Man freut sich über den Award und gibt ihn weiter.

Und hier meine Antworten auf Matthews Fragen.

Warum hast du mit dem Bloggen angefangen? 2010 haben wir unsere Jobs gekündigt und sind ein Jahr rumgereist. Der Blog war ursprünglich für unsere Reisegeschichten, enge Freunde und Familie da. Als die Reise vorbei war, nahm ich mir vor, den Blog am Leben zu erhalten und ihn mit neuen und alten Reisegeschichten zu füllen, weil es immer weiter geht. Ich schreibe auf Englisch und übersetze alles auf Deutsch, so dass meine Familie und jeder, der lieber was auf Deutsch liest, alles mitverfolgen kann.

Was ist ein Ort, den du am liebsten besucht hast? Matt und ich sind beide gerne draußen. Nationalparks sind definitiv oben auf unserer Liste, zum Beispiel Banff National Park in Kanada und Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, aber uns hat es bei unserer Weltreise auch total gut in Ecuador und Laos gefallen.

Was steht ganz oben auf deiner Löffelliste? Mehr Nationalparks und mehr Wandern. Tatsache ist, wir haben Flüge nach Seattle gebucht und fahren später dieses Jahr in die North Cascades. Was ist dein Traumjob? Ich würde weniger arbeiten, um mehr Zeit zum Entdecken zu haben, vielleicht 10-20 Stunden die Woche und ich würde auch weniger Zeit im Auto und mehr draußen verbringen.

Was ist dein Lieblingsbuch? 1984 von George Orwell, ein dystopischer Roman aus dem Jahr 1949 über einen totalitären Überwachungsstaat. Ich habe das Buch zum ersten Mal in meinem Englischkurs in der Oberstufe gelesen. Es ist auch eins der wenigen Bücher, die ich mehrmals gelesen habe (das andere ist Das Parfum von Patrick Süskind). Dazu kommt noch der erste Satz: Es war ein heller, kalter Tag im April und die Uhren schlugen dreizehn… Und fangt mir gar nicht damit an, wie relevant das Buch in der heutigen Zeit ist.

Was machst du am liebsten, wenn du nicht bloggst? Laufen, denn das heißt draußen und aktiv sein. Mit dem Winter in Neuengland kann das eine Herausforderung sein, aber mir ist das egal. Laufen macht den Kopf frei und ich habe Zeit für mich. Mir gefällt das. Manchmal blogge ich auch über das Laufen, weil es ähnlich wie Reisen ist, weil man an neue Orte kommt, entdecken kann und ein Gefühl der Freiheit bekommt.

Reist du mit Kindern? Wir haben keine Kinder, aber wenn wir welche hätten, dann würde ich auch mit ihnen verreisen.
