Hiking to the Boulder Star on New Year’s Day

Every year, Boulder lights up a star on Flagstaff Mountain during the holiday season. The first time it was lit was in December 1947. We would see it once a week driving home from the German School in Boulder. According to NPR, the star is made of more than 350 light bulbs strung around tall poles, and it towers over downtown Boulder. The structure used to be lower to the ground, but after several years of vandalism, broken bulbs and rearranging the star into different symbols – from a peace sign to a cross – it got a makeover.

You can no longer hike directly to it but you can get close at the Halfway House, a 1.5-mile hike that is kid friendly but not flat – Boulder style. And the cool thing is that you get to hike back in the dark if you want to see it lit up. It was Caroline’s first dark hike and we brought a flashlight and headlamp. We hiked with a dear friend and everyone had fun, plus we got to see some bonus deer. So much better than driving up the road in my opinion. I only got two photos to share this time but they’re worthwhile.

It doesn’t look that cool so close up but it was still a fun hike for the kids. Es sieht zwar nicht so cool aus, wenn man so nah dran ist, aber war aber trotzdem eine lustige Wanderung für die Kinder.

Jedes Jahr gibt es auf dem Flagstaff Mountain in Boulder während der Weihnachtszeit einen beleuchteten Stern. Er wurde zum ersten Mal im Dezember 1947 angemacht. Wir sahen ihn jede Woche, als wir von der deutschen Schule in Boulder heimfuhren. Laut NPR besteht der Stern aus mehr als 350 Glühbirnen, die um große Stangen gebunden sind und sie erheben sich über Downtown Boulder. Das ganze Ding war mal weiter unten am Boden, aber nach vielen Jahren mutwilliger Beschädigung, kaputten Glühbirnen und der Neuanordung des Sterns in verschiedene Symbole – vom Friendszeichen bis zu einem Kreuz – wurde alles neu gemacht.

Man kann nicht mehr direkt hinwandern, aber man kann bis zum Halfway House und ist damit ziemlich nah dran; eine Wanderung von 1,5 Meilen (2,4 km), kinderfreundlich, aber nicht flach – ganz im Stil von Boulder. Und das Coole ist, dass man im Dunkeln zurückwandern darf, wenn man alles beleuchtet sehen will. Es war Carolines erste Wanderung im Dunkeln und wir hatten eine Taschenlampe und Stirnlampe dabei. Wir waren mit einer guten Freundin unterwegs, alle hatten Spaß und außerdem gab es noch ein paar Rehe als Bonus. So viel besser als einfach mit dem Auto die Straße hochzufahren, finde ich zumindest. Ich hab nur zwei Fotos diesmal, aber die sind es wert.
