Maine’s Coastline Attractions

When my mom and I went to Acadia National Park this fall, we stopped in two places to break up the trip: Ogunquit and Cape Elizabeth. Both offer a way to enjoy fabulous views of the ocean, and the weather was just perfect.

Ogunquit is a small coastal town less than 1.5 hours away from Boston. A great place to stroll around. It was quite busy the week after Labor Day. One of the attractions is walking the Marginal Way, a 1.25-mile coastal walkway with breaktaking vistas of the town and the ocean.

A must-see on Cape Elizabeth is Portland Head. If you’re a fan of Edward Hopper (I am), his lighthouse painting from 1927 is one of his greatest works of art in my opinion. With a bright blue sky behind it and warm fall weather, it couldn’t have been a better day to visit.

The weather was just perfect. Das Wetter war einfach nur perfekt.

Als meine Mutter und ich diesen Herbst im Acadia Nationalpark waren, hielten wir unterwegs an zwei Orten an, um ein Päuschen einzulegen: Ogunquit und Cape Elizabeth. Beide bieten einen tollen Blick auf das Meer und das Wetter war einfach nur perfekt.

Ogunquit ist eine kleiner Küstenort, der weniger als 1.5 Stunden von Boston entfernt ist. Ein netter Ort für Spaziergänge. Es war in der Woche nach Labor Day ganz schön was los. Eine der Attraktionen ist ein Spaziergang auf dem Marginal Way, einem Küstenweg von 2 km mit toller Aussicht auf den Ort und das Meer.

Auf Cape Elizabeth muss man zum Portland Head. Wenn man ein Fan von Edward Hopper ist (wie ich), ist sein Gemälde von diesem Leuchtturm von 1927 eins der besten Kunstwerke meiner Meinung nach. Mit knallblauem Himmel und warmem Herbstwetter hätte es kein besserer Tag für einen Besuch sein können.

At the lighthouse, there was a plaque about how Henry Wadsworth Longfellow often walked from Portland to visit the lighthouse. He was friends with the keepers and the lighthouse was supposedly his inspiration for his poem “The Lighthouse”. Am Leuchtturm war ein Schild, auf dem stand, wie Henry Wadsworth Longfellow oft von Portland zum Leuchtturm gelaufen ist. Er war mit den Wärtern befreundet und man sagt, der Leuchtturm sei wohl seine Inspiration für das Gedicht „The Lighthouse” (der Leuchtturm) gewesen.

Beach to Beacon 10k – Portland and Cape Elizabeth, Maine

Last weekend, we did the Beach to Beacon 10k on Cape Elizabeth in Maine, a race that has been around since 1998 and that had almost 6,500 finishers this year, among them Shalane Flanagan and Meb Keflezighi, the 2014 Boston Marathon champion. Summer races can be rough because of the weather. This one was not only humid, it was also quite hilly. I had looked up the course beforehand but not fully realized the uphill finish until I was struggling. Oh well. It surely wasn’t my fastest race but it was a fun weekend.

We went with a group of 6 people from our running club, the Somerville Road Runners: Matt, Urvi, Jesse, Julie and Scott. This was Matt and my first time doing AirBnB, a website for people to rent out their homes. It’s a great alternative to getting a bland hotel and to being separated from the other people you’re traveling with. While not on the cheap side like Couchsurfing and also not necessarily a better deal than a hotel, it’s a nice way for everyone to stay in the same apartment, cook their own food, and hang out together.

The race organization was a disaster. We decided to take one of the shuttle buses to the start line. Once we arrived at the meeting point, there were not enough buses. Luckily, I had used the bathroom there because we didn’t see any at the start line. There were probably not enough anyway. Not only did we get to the start with no time (and space) to warm up, people were just running into the woods to relieve themselves. It was a mess. Getting back to our car after the race also took way too long due to ridiculously long lines and not enough buses again. Why? You gotta be a little more organized. They get thousands of people every year. How is this possible?

As I said before, it was still a fun weekend but I probably wouldn’t go through all the hassle again. One of the best parts was our night out at the Novare Res Bier Café with an excellent beer selection and terrific food. Thanks, Jesse for taking us there! Letztes Wochenende waren wir beim Beach to Beacon 10km-Lauf auf Cape Elizabeth in Maine, den es schon seit 1998 gibt und bei dem dieses Jahr 6.500 Leute durchs Ziel kamen, unter anderem Shalane Flanagan und Meb Keflezighi, der Gewinner des Boston Marathons 2014. Wettläufe im Sommer können aufgrund des Wetters anstrengend sein. Dieser hier war nicht nur schwül, sondern auch ziemlich steil. Ich hatte mir vorher die Strecke angeschaut, war mir aber irgendwie nicht der Steigung am Ende bewusst, bis ich schon dabei war, mich da hochzuquälen. Na ja. War sicher nicht mein schnellster Lauf, aber trotzdem ein lustiges Wochenende.

Wir waren mit einer Gruppe von 6 Leuten aus unserem Laufclub, den Somerville Road Runners unterwegs: Matt, Urvi, Jesse, Julie und Scott. Für mich war es das erste Mal mit AirBnB, einer Webseite für Personen, die ihre Wohnung vermieten. Es ist eine gute Alternative zu einem langweiligen Hotel und man ist mit den Leuten zusammen, mit denen man unterwegs ist. Sicher nicht so günstig wie Couchsurfing und auch nicht unbedingt billiger als ein Hotel, ist es doch eine nette Möglichkeit mit allen in der gleichen Wohnung zu übernachten, selbst zu kochen und einfach zusammen abzuhängen.

Die Organisation des Laufs war eine Katastrophe. Wir hatten uns für einen der Shuttlebusse zur Startlinie entschieden. Als wir am Treffpunkt ankamen, waren nicht genug Busse da. Zum Glück bin ich dort noch auf die Toilette gegangen, denn am Start hab ich keine gesehen. Es waren wahrscheinlich sowieso nicht genug da. Wir hatten nicht nur keine Zeit (und keinen Platz) zum Aufwärmen, die Leute liefen einfach in den Wald, um sich zu erleichtern. Das totale Chaos. Nach dem Rennen wieder zu unserem Auto zu kommen dauerte auch ewig lang, weil die Schlangen unendlich lang waren und es wieder nicht genug Busse gab. Warum? Man muss doch ein bisschen organisierter sein. Da kommen jedes Jahr Tausende von Menschen hin. Wie kann das sein?

Wie ich bereits gesagt habe, das Wochenende war schon lustig, aber ich würde mir das Ganze nicht nochmal antun. Am besten war eigentlich unser Abend im Novare Res Bier Café, wo es eine hervorragende Auswahl an Bier und Essen gab. Danke an Jesse für den Tipp! Matt und ich fuhren Sonntag früh nach Hause, aber der Rest unserer Gruppe sah zufällig Meb, der gerade bei seinem morgendlichen Lauf unterwegs war. Herrlich!
