Our visit to Madrid was delightful and while we did a lot of walking, I wanted to focus on a few things that stuck out.
1. The street signs. Every street had a beautiful street sign with a depiction of what the street meant. For example, Calle de Postas showed a post coach heading for that famous first post office. And there were so many more.
2. Jamón and tapas. Now finally in Spain, we started tasting the local jamón with many cañas (small beers). ¡Qué rico! Yum! A great food spot was the Mercado de San Miguel where we just sampled tapa after tapa!
3. The Prado. With more than 3,000 canvases, the Prado is the greatest collection of paintings by European masters. We took advantage of their free hours (from 6-8 pm; Matt’s immigration line in Lisbon was a lot worse) to enjoy Goya’s black paintings and the famous Las Meninas, which I fondly remember from my Spanish textbook in college.
Madrid was a very busy place and there were so many people in the street at all times of the day that it sometimes felt like New York City. Does Madrid ever sleep? It probably doesn’t, and we were happy to be there to take it all in.
This is just one. I loved them all. Das ist nur eins. Ich fand die alle toll.
Mmmmh, cañas and jamón.

This was even better than seeing the Mona Lisa in Paris. Plus, there is so much more happening in this painting (source: Wikicommons).
