Labor Day hikes usually make for some really glorious hikes here. This year, I went up to Hallet Peak, which is the peak you see from Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. I knew it would be busy, so I reserved the 5-7 AM timed entry, only to find out that it was still crazy busy. A really long line to enter the Bear Lake Corridor, early in the morning. But the way it always is, once you venture off the beaten path, the trail gets very quiet and I even had Hallet Peak to myself for a little while before others arrived. Glorious, just glorious.
I did a little hike near Durango that was delightful. We had to split up and do our own hikes while the other parent stayed with Caroline. I had originally planned this hike with Caroline but it would have been too difficult anyway, so I’m glad I went by myself. The directions on AllTrails were definitely not right and even with a lack of signage, I found the trail eventually and had a great time with terrific views. Check out the photos and video.
My last long hike before the snow came was the Bluebird Lake Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park in the Wild Basin area, one of the less busy areas of the park. When I arrived there early on a Tuesday morning, I was the only one at the parking lot. No one even checked my park pass. Whenever I go on these solo hikes, I don’t plan much in advance other than looking at the weather forecast and taking a day off during the week. This hike, however, turned out to be on the WINDIEST DAY that week.
It had been a few years since I went to that area. In 2018, Caroline was still very little and easy to carry. I hiked to Ouzel Falls with her on my back while Matt went to Ouzel Lake by himself, and we met up back at the trailhead. This was back in the days when we were in Longmont to check whether we wanted to live here. Deal! I had been intrigued to check out Ouzel Lake and found the hike to Bluebird Lake, which looked terrific.
Bluebird Lake was gorgeous but I was only able to stay for a little bit because it was so windy. I took in the scenery as much as I could but turned around and then found a less windy spot at Ouzel Lake where I was able to have my sandwich in peace without getting blown away completely. About 15 minutes from the trailhead I got stuck with other hikers because of a moose with her calf. What a way to finish a 14-mile hike. Totally worth it!
Keine Frage!
