A quick post with some nice wintery photos of a Gregory Canyon loop hike in Boulder where I went in December 2023. The highlight was about midway with a view of the snow-capped Rocky Mountains. Just wonderful.
Einfach toll.
I vividly remember hiking up to the Royal Arch in Boulder in September 2020 because it was a hot fall day that was followed by snow the following day and us frantically preparing the garden for the first snow of the season. Would it always snow this early in Colorado? It would not. In 2023, I returned to do the winter edition of the same hike. I love that you can have such different experiences depending on the season and it’s almost like you’ve never been there before. Check out my snowy photos and compare them to these.
Nein.
In true Colorado fashion, we got our first snowfall at the end of October. In November, I did the winter edition of two hikes I had done in the summer or fall: Nymph, Dream and Emerald Lake and Lake Haiyaha. Oh, what a difference the seasons make. Rocky Mountain National Park is just great, regardless of when you go. Enjoy the photos.
The next weekend adventure with my parents was a trip down to Colorado Springs with a visit to Pikes Peak, a drivable 14er. I can’t stress it enough how great it is to provide these experiences even if you can’t go on strenuous hikes. My parents loved it and with an elevation of 14,115 feet, they had never been on a mountain that high. Everyone did OK with the altitude but we brought a can of oxygen just in case. It was eucalyptus flavored, a big hit with Caroline. The next day, we also visited Garden of the Gods, which is always scenic. A successful getaway!
Rocky Mountain National Park is one of my favorite places. I am so grateful that we only live an hour away because it’s great for day trips if you need a break from life. In the summer, I did a loop hike there that included six lakes: Bear Lake, Two Rivers Lake, Lake Helene, Odessa Lake, Fern Lake, and Cub Lake. The weather certainly delivered because I got everything from sunshine, rain, hail, gloomy and blue skies. While I do love a blue sky, that weather pattern made the hike even more special.
I always enjoy talking to other hikers on the trail. I chatted with an older couple as we were looking at Lake Odessa from above. The older folks always have something interesting to say. It’s also always great to hear when people are impressed by my distances. This was 13 miles – long but not crazy long. Someone else also called me a “young girl”. Being in my forties now, I’ll take it. Another great thing is that even though Rocky Mountain National Park is a super busy place, once you venture off a little, you don’t see that many people. I enjoyed Odessa Lake by myself, for example, and this was on a Monday in August at the peak of summer vacation.
This hike was also interesting because it went through a burn area. As I was leaving Odessa Lake, someone told me that things were about to get ugly. In 2020, there was the East Troublesome fire that raged through parts of the national park, burning about 15 miles of trail. As I was leaving Odessa Lake and getting closer to Fern Lake, I did notice all the dead trees. This was especially heartbreaking because I went there with Caroline in 2019 and have pictures from before the fires. BUT, what I wasn’t expecting was just the sheer beauty of all the wildflowers with hues of pink, yellow and white. Nature takes things back, doesn’t it? Check out the photos for more.
The next silly thing I did was the Manitou Incline in Manitou Springs, CO. It had been on my list for a while but since it was two hours away, it required some planning and driving. After dropping off Matt and Caroline at the Denver Airport, it was only one more hour to get there. I arrived early and checked out Manitou Springs. Cute! You have to make a (free) reservation for the Incline but they let me in earlier, too. Phew!
According to Wikipedia, “the trail is the remains of a former narrow gauge funicular railway whose tracks washed out during a rock slide in 1990”. Now, you can hike up with an elevation gain of 2,011 feet in less than a mile. I had to do it, ha ha ha. There are approximately 2,744 steps from the bottom to the summit, although the top step is numbered “2,768”. Apparently, the number of steps changes occasionally with trail maintenance and deterioration.
Unfortunately, it was a rainy day and I didn’t get any views at the top but I turned around a bunch of times during my ascent to enjoy the scenery. I was soaking wet from sweat (and a little bit of rain) when I arrived at the summit but who cares? All worth it and maybe this will have to be a repeat on a sunny day. I’m always up for a challenge. YOLO and we’re not getting any younger, aren’t we?
After Durango, there was one more hike in late July with the kiddos and that was it for the hiking season for them. I’ve done many more hikes since then but Caroline did so great this year that I also didn’t want to push it too much. We went to Bierstadt Lake with a friend and while there was whining, it’s always a good time going to the national park so I’ll leave you with a few scenic pictures while keeping the kiddos’ privacy. Caroline hiked her age this summer with 5.5 miles (not this hike) but maybe she’ll do 6 next year. See you soon, trail!
After Durango, we went up north to our next destination. More on that later. The drive through Silverton and Ouray, two old mining towns, was very scenic and we stopped in each town for a little to stroll around. Well worth the visit. The pictures and captions really tell the full story.
I did a little hike near Durango that was delightful. We had to split up and do our own hikes while the other parent stayed with Caroline. I had originally planned this hike with Caroline but it would have been too difficult anyway, so I’m glad I went by myself. The directions on AllTrails were definitely not right and even with a lack of signage, I found the trail eventually and had a great time with terrific views. Check out the photos and video.
This is a mini post with just a few photos. On a Sunday in June, I had planned to do the Tombstone Ridge via Ute Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park with Caroline. Unfortunately, the parking lot was full when we got there, so we ended up driving to the Alpine Visitor Center, which has scenic views of the park. Caroline wasn’t having it that day. She said she didn’t feel well but was fine when we got back. Maybe it was the altitude or maybe we had done too much hiking recently. Who knows? We drove back and I took a few photos from some overlooks on Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in North America. Good enough.
Gut genug.
