I vividly remember hiking up to the Royal Arch in Boulder in September 2020 because it was a hot fall day that was followed by snow the following day and us frantically preparing the garden for the first snow of the season. Would it always snow this early in Colorado? It would not. In 2023, I returned to do the winter edition of the same hike. I love that you can have such different experiences depending on the season and it’s almost like you’ve never been there before. Check out my snowy photos and compare them to these.
Nein.
After Durango, there was one more hike in late July with the kiddos and that was it for the hiking season for them. I’ve done many more hikes since then but Caroline did so great this year that I also didn’t want to push it too much. We went to Bierstadt Lake with a friend and while there was whining, it’s always a good time going to the national park so I’ll leave you with a few scenic pictures while keeping the kiddos’ privacy. Caroline hiked her age this summer with 5.5 miles (not this hike) but maybe she’ll do 6 next year. See you soon, trail!
Our last stop was Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. We spent one night camping and enjoyed the night sky. Since the park is an international dark sky park, the sky was spectacular and even the moon looked different. You could see the dark side of it that you typically don’t see. The next day, we drove a little through the park before heading back to Longmont. According to the national park website, the park “exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky.” The United States never disappoints!
Unser letztes Ziel war der Black Canyon of the Gunnison Nationalpark.
So behind on writing. I just haven’t been motivated lately. In July, we went to Durango for four nights and dang, Durango is nice. We had a charming AirBnB outside of town with a cat included. I love that and it threw me back to our 2010/2011 travels when most accommodations had a cat included. It was hot when we were there. Upper 90s to 100 every day.
Durango has a cute little downtown, a trail along the river and a railroad museum that is small but entertaining enough. A bigger destination is Mesa Verde National Park, which was a delight but at 100 degrees, Caroline didn’t feel like walking around too much, and I don’t blame her. According to the National Park Pamphlet, “Mesa Verde National Park was created in 1906 to preserve the archeological heritage of the Ancestral Pueblo people, both atop the mesas and in the cliff dwellings below”. Super cool to see even if we didn’t have a reservation for the Cliff Palace.
Photos of Durango and Mesa Verde follow to tell the rest of the story.
Remember when I attempted to climb up Bear Peak last year and didn’t make it because I ran out of time? Well, on July 4 I returned. What a fabulous hike. The views at the top were terrific in all directions and there was no crazy “male energy” guy this time. I also realized that there was no way I would have made it last time because I still had the steepest section ahead of me (and the whole hike was steep). That hike kicked my butt and I couldn’t go down the stairs properly for a few days. 2,673 feet of elevation gain in a little more than 5 miles. All worth the pain. Don’t miss the panorama video.
VIDEO: I center my videos before publishing them but in the emails they sometimes look off. Pardon me.
Bitte entschuldigt.
This is a mini post with just a few photos. On a Sunday in June, I had planned to do the Tombstone Ridge via Ute Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park with Caroline. Unfortunately, the parking lot was full when we got there, so we ended up driving to the Alpine Visitor Center, which has scenic views of the park. Caroline wasn’t having it that day. She said she didn’t feel well but was fine when we got back. Maybe it was the altitude or maybe we had done too much hiking recently. Who knows? We drove back and I took a few photos from some overlooks on Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in North America. Good enough.
Gut genug.
If you don’t want to deal with the timed entry and the lines for getting into Rocky Mountain National Park, consider heading to Hermit Park, close to Estes Park. Yes, there is a $10 entry fee but I don’t mind paying for our parks. The Kruger Rock Trail is family friendly, scenic, not too hard or too long (4 miles), and you’re rewarded with views of Rocky Mountain National Park at the end. Highly recommend.
This winter, I only did one snow hike because there was lots of skiing. More on that later. In January, I went to Mills Lake at Rocky Mountain National Park. Planning to park at Bear Lake on a Sunday morning, I was nervous, only to find out that getting there in the depth of winter at 7:15 AM was no problem at all. It was packed when I left before noon. In the summer, that lot fills up by 5 AM. I highly recommend hiking there in the winter. Fewer crowds, gorgeous winter landscape, and just sheer beauty everywhere.
For some reason, I brought my snowshoes but forgot my spikes. Spikes would have been enough that day as the snow was packed and easy to walk on. I snowshoed to Mills Lake, which I had only seen in the fall on a hike with Caroline. I love how hiking during different seasons gives you a totally different experience in Colorado. When I got to Mills Lake, I was by myself the whole time, along with a bird who kept coming back, for my food probably, but it was just a great moment alone in nature.
In late August, we had friends from Massachusetts visit and I suggested going up to Rocky Mountain National Park with their two boys, aged four and six. When I did Sky Pond in July, I had talked to another hiker and he had recommended the Emerald Lake Trail that covers three lakes in one hike, is kid friendly and not too long at about four miles total. Even if Caroline says that she doesn’t like hiking, she actually had fun stopping at the three lakes, throwing rocks in and climbing over boulders. I did have to carry her back in our hiking pack but it was all worth it. And I had that song stuck in my head all day long: All I have to do is dreeeeeaaaaam…
All I have to do is dreeeeeaaaaam…
